SPS is asking parents to host local meetings where they can invite their neighbors to discuss bell times changes. SPS has scheduled several facilitator trainings for those who would like to host such meetings.

So far, these are the three leading options (the Bell Time Analysis Task Force has also considered an 8-period day for high schools):

  1. keep things as they are
  2. a modified flip of elementary and high school bell times
  3. extend the high school day by 50 minutes and add an optional seventh period, then offer students the option of late arrival

BTA IV capital levy project nominations due

You may nominate a project to be built or funded by the BTA IV capital levy that the district plans to place on the ballot in February, 2016. The deadline to submit a project nomination is April 30, 2015.

Internet and online safety seminar

Parents or guardians of any child who uses the Internet are invited to a seminar with Seattle Police Detective Stephanie Thomas, a high-risk victims specialist. Learn how to support, protect and educate yourself and your child about:
    – cyberbullying
    – social networking
    – online posting
    – sexting
    – teens as targets
    – Internet and cell phone safety

Children may attend, but the subject matter is geared towards parents and sensitive topics will be discussed. The seminar is not recommended for children under 12. Free childcare will be available in the Arbor Heights YMCA room.

West Seattle HCC Pathway Focus Group nominations due

We are forming a focus group to provide an opportunity for school leaders and community members to collaborate on implementing new Highly Capable services at Madison Middle School and West Seattle High School. If you are interested in joining the focus group, please return the application form below to the Advanced Learning Office by Friday, May 1.

Fall 2016 is the target date for implementation at Madison Middle School. A target date has not yet been established for West Seattle High School. Chief Sealth International High School, which offers the IB Diploma program, is planning to introduce the IB Career Path in the future.

Last day to register for K-4 summer school

Summer Staircase is a two week summer school, from June 22 to July 3, for students in kindergarten through 4th grade this year, who are below grade level in math, reading, or writing.

The school district will notify parents of students who are eligible (based on classroom tests, the MAP test, the Amplify test, and the Smarter Balanced Assessment).

This reminder is to encourage parents to sign up students who are eligible for Summer Staircase. The classes will be held at Highland Park Elementary and West Seattle Elementary, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Breakfast will be at 8:30, then math and literacy help from 9:00 to 12:00, and lunch from 12:00 to 12:25.

Transportation will be provided for students who live anywhere in West Seattle or South Park outside the Highland Park or West Seattle Elementary walk zones.
